🌼 Garden: Beneficial Flowers & Companion Planting (2026)

This page tracks all flowers and companion plants intentionally used to support the 2026 TorresVault vegetable garden in Sanford, NC (Zone 7b/8a).

These plants help with pest control, pollination, and attracting beneficial insects such as ladybugs, hoverflies, parasitic wasps, lacewings, and pollinators.

🌸 Primary Beneficial Flowers (Already in Use)

These are the main flowers planted around the TorresVault garden each year, especially because my wife loves flowers, and they naturally support pest control.

🐞 Beneficial Insects Encouraged

The garden layout and flower placement naturally attract:

These insects require both nectar and pests to remain active. Zinnias + Gerberas + nasturtiums provide long-lasting nectar sources.

🌿 Additional Optional Companion Plants

These are *not required*, but can be added if desired for even stronger pest control.

Nasturtiums (Optional)

Calendula (Optional)

Dill (Optional)

Cilantro / Coriander (bolted) (Optional)

Mint (Container Only) (Optional)

🌻 Seasonal Notes

Zinnias thrive all season in hot NC weather
Gerber daisies perform best spring → fall with steady watering
Ladybugs stay longer when zinnias are blooming
Early flowers (calendula, cilantro bloom) help kick off the season
Late-season blooms help cucumbers and beans continue producing

✔️ Summary

These support ladybugs, hoverflies, parasitic wasps, and pollinators
